While I love to run, I also have days where I am tired, sore, or just not feeling into a run. Sometimes I’ve just had a long day and lack motivation and other times the weather seems less than desirable for a run. This happens to me (a lot) and it probably happens to every level runner (even the pros).
Any time you feel unmotivated and you start having that mental conversation with yourself where you are talking yourself out of your run, workout, walk, or class at the gym, JUST GO!
You know the mental conversation I'm talking about:
“Ugh I’m tired now, maybe I’ll just go later.”
"No, I can’t go later. I have to work late.”
“Okay, but I could just do it tomorrow. Maybe I’ll feel better tomorrow.”
“Yeah, tomorrow could work. Today I just feel so blah.”
“No, I should go today.”
“Ughhh I really don’t want to.”
“Okay, I’m fiinnneee I'm gonna go today.”
In the end, you just have to go. Do it when you planned. Don’t put it off. JUST GO! I promise that once you put those sneakers on and get out of the door, you will find your motivation, and you will have a good run (or whatever it may be). You will feel SO much better about yourself if you JUST GO and you will be so happy that you got off of your butt and followed through with your plan.
I have never once regretted a run. It may start off sluggish and slow, and I may not feel that mentally “into it” at the start, but once I get going I end up feeling great and I start to ease into the run mentally and physically. When I do my long runs, for example, I usually start off slow and sometimes I don’t feel great, but once I get through 3 or 5 miles I am much more at ease and I start to hit my stride and enjoy the run more.
When you have these mental conversations with yourself, don’t let the unmotivated part of you win. At some point, the motivated part of you decided you were going to do something. Make sure that motivated part of you wins the mental fight. If not, you will be disappointed in yourself later. You will never regret DOING a workout, but you will certainly regret NOT doing one.
JUST GO!
